MGM showcases cutting-edge art and AI collaboration with “cAI™ Lab 2.0” exhibition at Art Macao 2025

  • MGM and Cai Guo-Qiang are presenting the AI artist cAI™ Lab 2.0 special exhibition as a featured highlight of “Art Macao: Macao International Art Biennale 2025”.
  • At the heart of the exhibition lies an immersive installation inspired by the “observer effect” in quantum physics and which enables visitors to become co-creators.

MGM continues to bridge art and innovation in Macau by launching a bold new platform for interdisciplinary exchange at the “Art Macao: Macao International Art Biennale 2025”. The company has once again joined forces with renowned contemporary artist Cai Guo-Qiang and his bespoke AI model, cAI™ to present the headline exhibition “cAI™ Lab 2.0 – Is It Your Gaze That Meets Mine, or Mine That Seeks Yours?” at the newly unveiled multi-purpose venue, Fantasy Box.

The exhibition’s central installation, “Is It Your Gaze That Meets Mine, or Mine That Seeks Yours?” aims to evoke emotional and sensory resonance

At the heart of the exhibition lies an immersive installation inspired by the “observer effect” in quantum physics. Visitors do more than just observe – they become co-creators. As audiences engage with the artwork, their gazes and reactions are captured and interpreted in real time by cAI™, forming a continuously evolving “chain of thought” that powers dynamic digital fireworks. Each interaction is displayed live on a “Quantum State Bulletin Board”, turning every visit into a unique, interactive journey of seeing and being seen.

Building on the success of last year’s “cAI™: Soul Scan” exhibition – where nearly 80,000 digital fireworks were generated by the public – cAI™ Lab 2.0 leverages this database to simulate human emotions and behaviors. The upgraded cAI™ model not only responds to participants but also collaborates with them, activating a “firework function” that embodies the spirit of human-algorithm co-creation. This approach pushes the boundaries of digital art and artificial intelligence, setting a new standard for cross-species artistic collaboration and cementing Macau’s growing role as a hub for cultural and creative innovation.

Beyond the main installation, visitors encounter the “cAI™ Observational Corridor”, featuring 12 conceptual projects inspired by cAI™’s explorations “beyond human”. Highlights include the “cAI™ Hotline”, where visitors can interact with the AI and receive a personalized love poem, and the returning “Daytime Fireworks Collaboration with cAI™”, which invites new public creativity in real-time digital art evolution.

The exhibition’s opening ceremony on 19 July brought together an illustrious guest list, including officials from the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao SAR, the Cultural Affairs Bureau, the Macao Government Tourism Office and MGM China as well as Cai Guo-Qiang himself.

Kenneth Feng, President and Executive Director of MGM China Holdings Limited, stated that MGM began its collaboration with Cai Guo-Qiang in 2019, staging the world debut of cAI™ in Macau in 2024. This year, in the newly unveiled “Fantasy Box,” MGM has further advanced audience co-creation, realizing cultural inclusiveness and boundless artistic collaboration through the concept of “you in me, and me in you.”

Cai shared that Macau has always been a very special place for him – “A city where A-ma and the gods gather, where fortune and the unknown go hand in hand”. He described it as a city full of magic and mystery, adding, “From Soul Scan to cAI™ Lab 2.0, I am grateful for Macau’s tolerance and vision.”

The city, he said, has always welcomed creative adventures and supported both the artist Cai and AI cAI™ in exploring the possibilities of art at the intersection of the material and the spiritual.

He also expressed his gratitude to MGM, saying it has become “the cradle of cAI™’s growth”, and revealed that there may be a “cAI™ 3.0” exhibition in Macau soon.

The exhibition runs from 20 July to 22 September at the “Fantasy Box” of MGM MACAU and is open to the public free of charge. MGM MACAU has also launched a range of limited-edition cultural and creative merchandise and themed culinary treats at its Pastry Bar, allowing the artistic journey to continue even after visitors leave the exhibition.
