Table tennis fever hits Macau as National Games fuel tourism momentum

  • Macau will in November host the table tennis competition as part of the 15th National Games and the National Paralympic Games.
  • The event is expected to inject new vitality into Macau’s “sports + tourism” industry.

Macau is gearing up for a grand sporting event with the much-anticipated table tennis competition of the 15th National Games and the National Paralympic Games set to take place in November.

This event is not only expected to capture the attention of numerous sports enthusiasts but also to inject new vitality into Macau’s “sports + tourism” industry.

Macau will host the table tennis event at Galaxy Arena, with tickets selling out quickly on the first day they were put up for sale. It is understood that many of those who have purchased tickets are tourists. By leveraging the sport’s popularity, the event will contribute to the moderate diversification of Macau’s economy.

In June, Macau held operational tests for the table tennis event of the 15th National Games Macau competition zone. The tests took place at the Macau East Asian Games Dome and, according to officials, ran smoothly.

The operational test saw technical representatives from the Chinese Table Tennis Association invited to Macau to provide guidance. They examined preparations for the event with reference to the procedures and requirements of formal competitions, including aspects such as venue setup, equipment, the configuration of competition technical personnel, information systems, personnel flow and guidance, sports displays, food safety, medical care and volunteer services.

In an interview, representatives of the Macau Table Tennis Association said the National Games’ table tennis venues meet high international standards. They also provide an opportunity for local athletes to train in a high-level environment and compete with top players, increasing their practical experience.

It is hoped that the enthusiasm generated by the National Games will encourage young people to participate in table tennis. These factors can help enhance Macau’s position in table tennis and provide better development opportunities for athletes.

Aside from the table tennis event itself, a series of peripheral activities will take place outside the competition venue, such as player autograph sessions and community exchange – all designed to strengthen the “sports tourism” model and boost revenue in various sectors such as tourism, hotels, catering and entertainment.

The National Games table tennis program features two divisions: the “Adult Group” and the “Youth Group” (under 18 years old). Each group includes men’s team, women’s team, men’s singles, women’s singles, and mixed doubles events, for a total of 30 medals. The competition will take place from 7 to 20 November 2025 at Galaxy Arena.
