“Genesis and Spirit” Hainan Intangible Cultural Heritage exhibition opened in Macau on 30 June

Presented by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the People’s Republic of China and the Secretariat for Social Affairs and Culture of the Macao SAR Government, organised by the Cultural Affairs Bureau and the Department of Tourism, Culture, Radio, Television and Sports of Hainan Province, co-organised by the Hainan Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection Centre, and supported by Galaxy Entertainment Group, the “Genesis and Spirit – Showcase of Hainan Intangible Cultural Heritage” held a grand opening ceremony at Mount Fortress Garden on 30 June.

Hainan Province is a place where diverse cultures gather. The province currently has 82 representative items of intangible cultural heritage including 32 representative items of national intangible cultural heritage. The “Genesis and Spirit” series presents the intangible cultural heritage of Hainan Province to Macau residents and visitors in the form of special exhibitions, stage performances, live show demonstrations and experience workshops.

At the opening ceremony, performers from Hainan Province superbly performed nine Hainan national and provincial intangible cultural heritage items, including Hainan opera, bamboo and wooden instrumental music of the Li ethnic group, and folk songs of the Li ethnic group, allowing residents and visitors to understand the unique charm of Hainan Province intangible cultural heritage craftsmanship.

Additionally, the “Genesis and Spirit – Performances of Hainan Intangible Cultural Heritage” was held on Saturday 1 July at Broadway Food Street of Broadway Macau and the Iao Hon Market Park respectively, presenting to the audience a Li ethnic fashion show, Hainan opera, singing and dancing as well as a puppet show.

The exhibition will be held at the Macao Museum from 1 July to 8 October, with three themes: “Cradle of Coconut City”, “Spirit of Li Ethnicity” and “Lifestyle of Li People”. These will showcase Hainan coconut carvings; the traditional spinning, dyeing, weaving and embroidery skills of the Li ethic group; cultural and creative products of intangible cultural heritage elements in Hainan; and other works.
