The Venetian Macao is currently hosting the “The Exhibition of Annual of Contemporary Art of China 2022” until 27 February at Cotai Expo Hall C, featuring original works from 28 celebrated Chinese contemporary artists. This exhibition, which kicked off on 1 February, offers a comprehensive retrospective of the finest works in Chinese contemporary art for the 2022 year.
Encompassing a wide array of mediums such as oil painting, videos, performance art and installations, the exhibition delves into various themes, including the intersection between art and technology, the shifting boundaries and value of art, perspectives on femininity, urbanization, and the evolution of media communication. It provides a reflection on social reality and themes explored in Chinese contemporary art in a structured manner, with the aim of initiating a dialogue about art and the spirit of the times.
Dr Wilfred Wong, Executive Vice Chairman of Sands China, highlighted that hosting the exhibition underscores Macau’s role as “a base for cultural exchange and China’s window to the world to showcase the strong vitality of Chinese contemporary art to tourists from all over the world”. He expressed hopes that the exhibition would “enable Macau’s local artists to have a thorough understanding of the trends in the development of Chinese contemporary art – so that they can foresee the evolving trends in this field and gain inspiration for their creative works.”
Prof Zhu Qingsheng, the exhibition curator – who is also a professor at Peking University – remarked that hosting such an exhibition in Macau “is literally showcasing the cultural achievements of China’s economic reform to the world”.
Co-organized by Sands China and the Chinese Modern Art Archive (CMAA) of Peking University and supported by the Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST) Library and Faculty of Humanities and Arts, the exhibition is open to the public free of charge.
