To foster interaction between autistic children and their parents, and to allow participating families to experience the joy of parent-child collaboration in a relaxed and pleasant atmosphere, Kanner’s Home for the Autistic and Rotary Club of Oriental Pearl Macau jointly organized a cooking competition on Sunday 21 September. The event received enthusiastic support from parents.
The competition venue buzzed with excitement as youngsters, guided and assisted by their parents, transformed into “little chefs”. From washing ingredients and cooking dishes to meticulously plating up, they immersed themselves in every step. Through collaborative division of labor, children not only acquired fundamental life skills but also honed their concentration and manual dexterity.
Mandy, President of Kanner’s Home for the Autistic, stated that the event’s purpose was to enhance parent-child communication through cooking, enabling children to learn fundamental steps like washing vegetables and cooking rice through hands-on practice.
“At the same time, parents learned how to guide their children during the teaching process, enhancing their independent living skills,” she said.
The event also included a joint shopping trip for parents and children, allowing youngsters to experience the purchasing process and build confidence in independent participation.
Twelve cooking stations were set up for the competition, with eight families participating – some spanning three generations – creating a warm and lively atmosphere. Beyond the cooking segment, participants shared their finished dishes, transforming the contest into a joyful family occasion.
Organizers said they hope the event will heighten societal awareness of the needs of families with autistic children, enabling more people to recognize the childrens’ brilliance and boundless potential.
