“Poemas de Fernando Pessoa” calligraphy exhibition showcases 44 bilingual works

  • The Rui Cunha Foundation has opened a new exhibition jointly curated by artists Fernando António and Choi Chun Heng.
  • The exhibition features 44 works in Portuguese and Chinese calligraphy, interpreting classic works of Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa.

The calligraphy exhibition “Poemas de Fernando Pessoa” (Poems of Fernando Pessoa), jointly curated by artists Fernando António and Choi Chun Heng, officially opened at the Rui Cunha Foundation on 23 June.

The exhibition features 44 works that interpret the classic poems of Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa through bilingual calligraphy in Portuguese and Chinese, presenting a renewed expression of Sino-Portuguese cultural and artistic exchange.

It originated from the artists’ previous collaboration, “Calligraphy of Thoughts in Portuguese and Chinese,” held in May 2024. That exhibition presented oriental aphorisms through bilingual calligraphy, receiving widespread public acclaim and leading to the new joint project.

According to the organizers, the current exhibition was initiated by António, who spent two years preparing the project before inviting Choi to take part. By using traditional Chinese brush calligraphy to interpret Portuguese literary works, the exhibition offers audiences a new way to appreciate the charm of Portuguese-language poetry from an artistic perspective.

António is a local Macau calligrapher and collector, currently serving as Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Macau Orient Painting and Calligraphy Association. The artist has previously participated in numerous calligraphy and painting exhibitions.

Choi has long been devoted to calligraphy, traditional Chinese painting and arts education. He is currently President of the Macau Dafengtang Art House and teaches calligraphy at various schools and local associations in Macau. He is widely recognized for his extensive artistic experience.

The exhibition will remain open to the public until 4 July, with free admission.
