Macao Polytechnic University Wins Silver Award in Global Medical Imaging Competition

The scientific research team of Macao Polytechnic University won a silver medal from the 2023 Global Medical Imaging Competition on 8 March, competing against nearly 2,000 participating teams from around the world. The MPU team was directed by Tao Tan, Associate Professor from the Faculty of Applied Sciences and Wang Rongsheng, a Master of Science postgraduate student majoring in Big Data and the Internet of Things.

The Global Medical Imaging Competition lasted for three months and in addition to the nearly 2,000 teams attracted 2,146 individual participants from across the globe. Competing teams were tasked with using the “rich mammography image data set” provided by the Radiology Society of North America (RSNA) in cooperation with multiple imaging laboratories around the world to develop a solution to quickly and accurately assess the patient’s breast health status based on their mammogram.

In this challenge, the Macao Polytechnic University team, under the guidance of Professor Tao Tan, employed a multi-model, multi-stage and multi-information fusion method using more than 50,000 mammogram images in a short period of time, and achieved excellent results.

The competition improves breast cancer identification technology, promotes medical services through research and technological innovation, and greatly reduces the negative impact of false positive diagnoses on patients. It is hoped that breast cancer can be diagnosed and screened early and medical procedures can be effectively improved.
