  • The Sands China Ltd Macau Open Badminton 2024 tournament saw six days of matches and crowned winners in five events.
  • The company hopes the tournament promotes Macau’s reputation as a “City of Sports”.

In late September, Sands China, in collaboration with the Badminton Federation of Macau (BFM), hosted the Sands China Ltd Macau Open Badminton 2024 tournament at the Macao East Asian Games Dome, presenting six spectacular days of matches for sports enthusiasts and crowning winners in five events: Men’s Singles, Women’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles.

First held in 2006, the tournament is an annual event categorized under the “HSBC BWF World Tour Super 300”. This year’s tournament saw a record-breaking number of athletes from 30 countries and regions registering to compete. Out of the 375 registered athletes, 259 qualified to participate in the event. The total prize pool for the tournament was US$210,000 (approximately MOP1.68 million). Both the semi-finals and finals were live-streamed on the BWF’s YouTube channel.

In addition, Sands organized a community outreach event, “Sands Cares Presents: Learn from Badminton Elites”, featuring two-time Olympic men’s doubles gold medalist Wang Chi-Lin from Chinese Taipei and Hong Kong’s No. 2 seed in men’s singles, Angus Ng. They shared their experiences and insights with 40 students from Escola dos Moradores de Macau and Our Lady of Fatima Girls’ School, as well as members of the Sands China Badminton Team.

Sands China stated that the company fully supports this high-profile sports event held in line with the Macau government’s strategy on diversification and organizing international mega events. The company hopes the tournament contributes to international goodwill, promotes Macau’s reputation as a “City of Sports” and strengthens its image as a world center of tourism and leisure.
