Macau artist Crystal W. M. Chan has unveiled her latest solo exhibition, “Subtropical Romance – Paintings by Crystal W. M. Chan”, at Taipa Village Art Space, which will be on display until February 2025.
The exhibition presents a series of new works by Chan, inspired by the evocative allure of the tropics and her profound connection with travel. Chan’s pieces explore the emotional landscape she navigates through her journeys, portraying both the loneliness and the lushness of distant lands.
Born and raised in Macau, Chan has honed her craft internationally, with educational and professional stints in Taiwan (China), Greece and New York. Her artworks consistently explore themes of affect and atmosphere, marked by emotionally charged lines and brushstrokes that convey solitary figures and stark landscapes. Chan’s technique blends the familiar with the abstract, skilfully depicting the emotional dissonance between individuals and their environments.
Through her latest works, Chan delves into themes of travel, transforming locales into objects of desire and capturing the essence of atmospheric memories. Her paintings invite viewers into a world of perpetual motion, echoing the dynamic essence of the tropics and resonating within both personal and collective imaginations.
João Ó, Curator and President of the Executive Board at Taipa Village Cultural Association, describes Chan’s newest series as a “visual narrative novel” that examines the emotional bonds between humans and exotic places. He praises Chan’s ability to manipulate her medium to connect directly with her audience, showcasing her natural ease and sophistication in painting.
