- The premiere of Macau 2049 ushers in a new future for Macau’s performing arts.
- The show serves as a world-class display platform for Chinese intangible cultural heritage and offers an innovative stage for multi-cultural exchange.
MGM, in collaboration with internationally renowned director Zhang Yimou, launched its ground-breaking residency show Macau 2049 in mid-December at the MGM Theater. This technological and artistic masterpiece not only sets a new benchmark for experiential tourism but also establishes a fresh cultural landmark for Macau’s performing arts scene.
Orchestrated by Zhang Yimou and supported by 20 world-class production teams, Macau 2049 delivers an 80-minute spectacle blending technology and art, combining advanced global AI technologies with multimedia presentations to explore the dialog between technology and traditional culture.
The production is divided into eight chapters, showcasing eight Chinese intangible cultural heritage art forms: Hua’er, Khoomei, Song and Dance of The Miao People, Peking Opera, Yangge, Yi Song, Lion Dance and Storytelling in North Shaanxi. Through innovative reimagining, the show revitalizes these cultural treasures, prompting audiences to reflect on the evolving relationship between technology and tradition.
To ensure accessibility for global audiences, the performance incorporates eight international languages, transcending language barriers and enabling audiences from around the world to connect with its profound themes.
Director Zhang Yimou remarked that Macau 2049 is a uniquely original production unlike anything else globally. The show integrates a diverse array of contributions from artists, engineers and scientists worldwide while delving into contemporary issues such as whether AI can replace humanity, evoking emotional resonance and stimulating critical thought among audiences.
“Through these eight chapters, we present authentic intangible cultural heritage performances spanning over 12,000 kilometers across China while addressing contemporary concerns about the future relationship between technology and humanity in the context of the current AI boom,” Zhang explained. “The show transcends typical entertainment standards, encouraging audiences to reflect deeply even after the performance concludes.”
Zhang also commended the local Macau teams who took on many aspects of the production’s operation for the premiere, praising their adaptability and rapid learning.
Pansy Ho, Chairperson and Executive Director of MGM China, described herself as the “concept initiator” for Macau 2049. She entrusted the creative vision and execution entirely to Zhang Yimou and his team, only seeing the complete performance for the first time during the premiere.
“The show not only met our expectations but exceeded them,” she remarked.
When asked about the show’s return on investment, Ho candidly stated, “Admittedly, the production costs were significant. However, the value brought by Zhang Yimou and his team of global industry experts far surpasses the investment made.”
She further explained that the decision to invest in Macau 2049 was not driven by conventional commercial considerations but rather by a fresh perspective on Macau’s future development.
“Macau is already a successful tourism destination with inherent appeal,” Ho noted. “In the past, it was widely regarded as an entertainment city, given that the industry has been the backbone of its economy. There’s nothing inherently wrong with this. However, as we celebrate the 25th anniversary of Macau SAR’s establishment, it’s time for the city to enter a new phase.”
“While Macau has always been a successful tourism destination with inherent appeal, it can no longer rely solely on traditional entertainment models. Instead, we must explore innovative formats to captivate a broader international audience.”
As a city in the Greater Bay Area (GBA), Ho emphasized the importance of extending Macau’s narrative beyond its borders.
“We need to leverage the collaborative advantages of the GBA to create a new concept of regional tourism, one that brings a fresh ecosystem to the entire area.
“The vision and ambition behind this production lies in integrating technology, traditional arts and the demands of 30 million annual visitors into a singular stage experience. By combining these diverse elements, we seek to break boundaries, reshape perceptions and deliver an entirely new kind of entertainment.
