What is New Macau

O MEDIA created the New Macau brand to be “The definitive record of economic diversification initiatives in Macau”

With a launch date of 1 January 2023, the concept was the culmination of nearly two years of research and development work undertaken by Macau media company O MEDIA, the constituent companies of which have been publishing media in Macau since 2005. Published as Macau CSR from 1 January to 31 December 2023, the brand name changed to New Macau from 1 January 2024.

In recent years, the Macau government has emphasized economic diversification for the SAR, and Macau’s six major tourism enterprises have committed no less than MOP 109 billion (US$13.6 billion) to this goal for the decade to 31 December 2032. The government has introduced the “tourism+” concept, also referred to “1+4”, with the “1” representing tourism and the “4” highlighting four new areas of economic activity for Macau: Big Health; New Tech; Modern Finance; and Sports, Arts and Culture. The Macau government also proposed 11 alternative areas of economic activity for Macau’s six major tourism enterprises during the 2022 re-tendering process for those enterprises.

New Macau focuses on numerous specific areas, predominantly related to economic diversification, but also with a nod to our social responsibility roots. These areas of focus include Arts and Culture, Big Health, Community Tourism, Entertainment, Environment, Equal Opportunity, Gastronomy, International Tourism, Maritime Tourism, MICE, Modern Finance, New Tech, Patriotism, Philanthropy, Responsible Gaming, Skills Development, SME, Society, Sports and Themed Amusements. All have been highlighted by the Macau government as important to Macau’s future.

New Macau seeks to play a leading role in raising awareness of such issues and closing the communications gap in Macau by providing the first dedicated, independent media channel focusing exclusively on economic diversification initiatives.

The New Macau brand is comprised of three main channels:

  • The new-mac.com website
  • The New Macau weekly email newsletter which issues at 12 noon Macau time each Wednesday
  • A hard-cover encyclopedia-style reference book, titled New Macau, published in January, April, July and October for the preceding quarter

All channels showcase economic diversification initiatives undertaken by companies and other organizations in Macau, and all content is published in Chinese and English.

New Macau is a “one-stop shop” for busy members of Macau society, particularly government officials, to understand the economic diversification initiatives being executed in Macau, and seeks to engage government departments, NGOs such as Macau associations, as well as Macau industry and the community at large. New Macau signs collaboration agreements with major Macau companies to help drive its mission of reporting on and raising awareness of Macau economic diversification initiatives.

New Macau also signs formal strategic partnership agreements with appropriate associations and other organizations delivering economic diversification and CSR initiatives in Macau.

New Macau has a Project Director who regularly attends events in Macau and consistently builds a network of relationships amongst potential and existing partners such as associations, charities, professional bodies, businesses and more. There is much scope to develop New Macau in the future, including the production of events related to economic diversification, regular video content and even the delivery of economic diversification initiatives.
