About New Macau
New Macau was created by Macau-based media company O MEDIA to serve as “The definitive record of economic diversification initiatives in Macau.”
Launched on 1 January 2023, the brand represented the culmination of nearly two years of research and development, supported by O MEDIA’s broader experience publishing media in Macau since 2005. The initiative was originally published under the title Macau CSR throughout 2023, before formally adopting the New Macau name from 1 January 2024.
Context and Rationale
The Macau SAR Government has placed sustained emphasis on the diversification of Macau’s economy and the healthy, sustainable development of Macau society. Central to this policy direction is the government’s “1+4” moderate diversification development strategy, where “1” represents the development of Macau as a World Center of Tourism and Leisure, supported by the nurturing of a dedicated and diversified integrated tourism and leisure industry, and “4” represents the continuous development of four key industries, Big Health, Modern Financial Services, New Technology and a broader category encompassing conferences and exhibitions, commerce and trade, arts and culture, and sports.
Complementing this framework, in late 2022 Macau’s six major tourism enterprises committed MOP 131 billion (US$16.4 billion) toward diversification initiatives for the decade ending 31 December 2032. At that time, the Macau government also proposed 11 alternative areas of economic activity.
Against this backdrop, O MEDIA identified a clear structural gap in Macau’s information landscape. While newspapers, magazines, and television outlets periodically report on diversification initiatives, there was no dedicated independent media channel focused exclusively on documenting and providing context to such developments.
New Macau was established to address this need, functioning as an independent, authoritative “media of record” for Macau’s economic diversification initiatives.
Editorial Focus
New Macau concentrates on 20 specific areas of focus, primarily aligned with Macau’s diversification priorities while retaining a connection to its CSR and social responsibility origins: Arts and Culture, Big Health, Community Tourism, Entertainment, Environment, Equal Opportunity, Gastronomy, International Tourism, Maritime Tourism, MICE, Modern Finance, New Tech, Patriotism, Philanthropy, Responsible Gaming, Skills Development, SME, Society, Sports and Themed Amusements.
Each of these areas has been highlighted by the Macau SAR Government as integral to Macau’s long-term development. New Macau seeks to raise awareness of these initiatives, promote informed discussion, and help close the communications gap between government, industry, and the community.
Positioning and Role
New Macau is designed as a practical “one-stop shop” for busy members of Macau society, particularly government officials and decision-makers, to understand the breadth and evolution of diversification initiatives being executed across Macau.
The New Macau platforms support corporate CSR and ESG reports produced by individual companies, government policy frameworks, and community and association-led initiatives. By offering a comprehensive, regular, Macau-wide perspective, New Macau provides continuity, comparability, and broader contextual insight to the economic diversification of Macau’s economy and society. New Macau is a tripartite initiative, embracing government, industry and the community.
Looking ahead, there remains substantial scope for further development, including economic diversification-focused events, expanded video and multimedia content and even initiatives supporting Macau diversification objectives.
