- The Taipa Village Cultural Association is exhibiting a series of photographs taken by Frank Lei in Cuba in 1992.
- The exhibition will run for two months and mainly features black-and-white images depicting the daily life of the Cuban people.
In May, with the assistance of the photography group Dialect, the Taipa Village Cultural Association (TVCA) held a two-month exhibition of the late renowned Macau photographer Frank Lei’s documentary photography series from his 1992 trip to Cuba. The series presents the unique perspective and profound emotions captured in the exotic landscapes of Cuba.
Lei passed away on 18 May 2022, leaving behind a large collection of little-known photographic works. With the support of his family, close friends and particularly Alan Ieong Chon Weng, one of the founders of the photography group Dialect, TVCA unveiled the documentary photography series on 7 May.
Cuba served as the primary theme for Lei’s early documentary photography series, having first visited the country in 1992. His travels took him not only to the capital, Havana, but also to the easternmost city of Santiago de Cuba, showcasing his profound interest and exploration of Cuban culture.
Ten years after his exploration of Cuba, Lei organized a photography exhibition and published a collection titled “Cuba, Cuba,” featuring a selection of color slides as the main narrative axis, presenting a vivid and vibrant impression of Cuba.
However, within Lei’s Cuban photographic archive, alongside these vibrant color slides, was a collection of previously unseen black-and-white photographs. For this exhibition, Lei’s family member Jane Lei has selected these black-and-white images and brought them to the local community.
The black-and-white photographs capture the daily lives and emotions of the Cuban people through a more subtle and introspective lens. Lei’s Cuba photography exhibition runs from 7 May to 9 July and comes highly recommended for anyone interested in photography.
