When the Macau Grand Prix meets the National Games

  • Macau hosted the 72nd Macau Grand Prix and the 15th National Games simultaneously this past week.
  • The government adopted a cross-departmental collaboration model to ensure both major events proceeded smoothly and safely.

In November 2025, Macau has become the focal point of Asia. As the roar of engines from the “72nd Macau Grand Prix” echoed across the city last weekend, the fervor of the 15th National Games unfolded simultaneously within Macau’s most impressive venues. This convergence of two major events accelerated the rhythm of this compact city to unprecedented levels.

The two events ran almost concurrently – the National Games from 9 to 21 November and the Grand Prix from 13 to 16 November. Within a mere few days, athletes, racing drivers and spectators from across the globe converged on Macau, transforming the city into a center of international attention. Facing such a monumental challenge, Macau draws upon its accumulated experience in hosting major events.

The government has adopted a cross-departmental collaboration model, with the Sports Bureau, Transport Bureau, Macao Government Tourism Office and multiple event committees jointly planning and flexibly allocating resources to ensure both events proceeded smoothly and safely.

Traffic management proved to be the greatest challenge, prompting the government to leverage smart city tools to effectively manage crowds, traffic flow and public safety during the concurrent Grand Prix and National Games. Measures included opening the Rotunda da Amizade B ramp ahead of schedule, suspending certain construction projects to free up road space and requiring bus and light rail operators to increase service frequency.

Beyond transport, accommodation presented another challenge. With both National Games athletes and racing teams requiring lodging, hotel bookings surged significantly. The government had pre-selected three hotels in Taipa to serve as the Athletes’ Village, accommodating competitors and technical officials. These properties were closed to the public during the Games. It is understood that the Athletes’ Village comprised the Pousada Marina Infante Hotel and two adjacent hotels.

Through multi-departmental collaboration, scientific traffic management and flexible resource deployment, Macau successfully transformed challenges into opportunities. Not only did it securely host two major sporting events, but it further cemented its international standing as a premier destination for major events.
