- MGM has become the first integrated resort in Macau to realize a fully localized, end-to-end recycling and upcycling system for used playing cards.

MGM China has launched the “Innovation and Technology Empowerment – MGM’s Localized Playing Cards Recycling and Upcycling Program,” becoming the first integrated resort in Macau to realize a fully localized, end-to-end recycling and upcycling system for used playing cards.

The initiative aims to leverage technology to promote the reutilization of waste resources and support Macau’s appropriate economic diversification.
The program is jointly advanced by MGM and local tech enterprise Fnetlink Technology Company Limited and is built on the “smart playing cards shredding assistance system” co-developed by the two parties in 2023.
Through an automated intelligent shredding system, used playing cards are processed into shredded material. Using an innovative dry fiber regeneration technology, the material is recycled on-site into recycled fibers without the use of water. These fibers can be further transformed into various eco-friendly packaging materials, including filler materials and recycled boards.

“MGM has always been committed to exploring more efficient and forward-looking sustainability solutions through innovative technology,” said Kenneth Feng, Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director of MGM China Holdings Limited.
“In response to the National 15th Five-Year Plan’s call to harness innovation and technology to drive green transformation, the initiative demonstrates MGM’s determination to collaborate with local tech enterprises in turning R&D achievements into practical applications.

“We hope that innovative programs like this will inject more creativity and practical possibilities into the diversification of local industries.”
The program is expected to recycle and upcycle approximately 3,000 tons of used playing cards annually, achieving a 100% recycling rate. Through localized processing, it will also reduce solid waste disposal and lower carbon emissions associated with cross-regional transportation, promoting a circular economy and supporting Macau’s development as a low-carbon city.
