The First Sino-Luso Conference on Blue Biotechnology, co-organised by the Sustainable Development Association and the University of Saint Joseph on 24 and 25 April, attracted researchers and industry professionals from mainland China and Portuguese-speaking countries. The event aimed to promote cooperation in the fields of marine and sustainable biotechnology.

Terence Lee, Co-founder and President of Sustainable Development Association, expressed gratitude to the Macau Economic and Technology Bureau and Sands China for its support of the conference and emphasised that the event brought together the most forward-thinking experts and researchers from China and Portuguese-speaking countries (including the Greater Bay Area and Macau).
He also said that “Challenges such as marine sustainable development cannot be addressed in isolation; they require shared knowledge, unified strategies, and partnerships that cross borders and oceans.
“By integrating diverse perspectives from different cultures, disciplines, and experiences, the conference is expected to generate new waves of thinking as broad and dynamic as the ocean itself.”
“Sustaincia adheres to the concept of continuous proactivity, not only paying attention to challenges but also encouraging hands-on participation, so as to jointly embark on the path of sustainable development.”
The First Sino-Luso Conference on Blue Biotechnology was held over two days at the University of Saint Joseph, with 22 speakers presenting on topics related to sustainable biotechnology across six different sessions.
The conference focused on the latest advancements in marine and sustainable biotechnology, as well as their contributions to sustainable development, human health, and economic development.
Discussion topics covered bio-prospecting and biological resources for various industries, bioremediation, aquaculture, pollution monitoring, microalgae applications, and more.
The welcome dinner was generously hosted by Marmeleira Seafood Restaurant, while Sands China extended an invitation to Sustaincia for an exclusive behind-the-scenes visit. This provided an opportunity to explore the company’s sustainability initiatives and accomplishments firsthand.
