Melco Resorts & Entertainment achieves 100% cage-free egg sourcing across global portfolio

  • Melco achieves goal of sourcing 100% of eggs from cage-free hens for use across its entire global portfolio.
  • The move towards cage-free eggs began in 2020 as part of the company’s efforts towards restoring the environment.

Melco Resorts & Entertainment has announced that it has achieved its target of sourcing 100% of its eggs from cage-free hens by 2025 across all of its operations worldwide. The move reflects the company’s commitment to both high-quality cuisine and responsible, sustainable sourcing, with a focus on supporting local food producers and advancing animal welfare.

Melco began its transition towards cage-free eggs in 2020, working in partnership with the Lever Foundation, a non-governmental organization focused on humane and sustainable protein supply in Asia. The company collaborated with local distributors to ensure a steady supply and to build economies of scale, facilitating a comprehensive shift to cage-free products across its properties in Macau, the Philippines and Cyprus.

Lawrence Ho, Chairman and CEO of Melco Resorts & Entertainment, stated that the company’s commitment to responsible sourcing remains steadfast. He described achieving the ambitious cage-free target across all food and beverage outlets as a significant milestone in embedding sustainability into Melco’s procurement process. Ho added that Melco will continue to pursue greater transparency, strengthen its supply chain and deepen engagement with suppliers.

Lily Tse, Sustainability Program Director of the Lever Foundation, commended Melco’s leadership, noting that the company’s actions have set an important precedent in the region and encourage other businesses to adopt higher animal welfare standards and sustainable practices.

Cage-free eggs are produced by hens that are free to roam, which research shows reduces food safety risks and supports more humane farming. The achievement aligns with wider calls from international organizations for improved animal welfare and public health.
