Camões, Culture , and Connections: IPOR leads a joyful June in Macau

The Month of Portugal, celebrated starting from Camões Day on 10 June, reaffirms Macau’s longstanding ties with Portuguese-speaking nations. To commemorate the 500th anniversary of Camões’ birth, the Instituto Português do Oriente (IPOR) led a month-long series of events that celebrated the rich cultural and linguistic heritage of the Lusophone world.

A diverse program of 32 events – including film screenings, concerts, literary presentations and discussions – was organized by the Portuguese Consulate General in Macau and Hong Kong, in collaboration with IPOR, AICEP, Casa de Portugal in Macau and Fundação Oriente. Among these, four signature events were curated by IPOR.

On 18 June, IPOR presented The Vast Empire of the Heart (O Vasto Império do Coração) by Sara Augusto at the Consulate General, with 75 guests in attendance. The accompanying photo exhibition centered on Camões Cave in Pak Gap Chaau Garden – which has become a prominent tourist attraction – remains open through 30 June.

In partnership with Fundação Oriente, IPOR hosted a piano recital at Clube Militar featuring Joana Rolo. Her performance blended classical music with live storytelling, offering a compelling exploration of the dialogue between Portuguese and international composers.

Another musical highlight featured Joana Rolo performing alongside soprano Elvire de Paiva e Pona in a concert tailored for children. Supported by the Cultural Development Fund of the Macau SAR Government and other cultural organizations, the event was designed to nurture an early appreciation for classical music.

On 28 June, IPOR welcomed author Isabel Rio Novo, who presented her biography Fortuna, Caso, Tempo e Sorte – Biography of Luís Vaz de Camões. At the Dr Stanley Ho Auditorium, she shared insights from her extensive research into the poet’s life and historical backdrop, offering fresh perspectives to the Macau audience.

These initiatives, along with broader academic and cultural collaboration with the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP), affirm IPOR’s ongoing role in advancing economic diversification and reinforcing Macau’s global standing, grounded in its bilingual identity and enduring East–West cultural dialogue.
