Caritas Macau

Caritas Macau was established on 8 December 1951, formerly known as “Centro Social Mateus Ricci”, a charity organization under the Catholic Diocese of Macau founded by Father Luis Ruiz Suarez, S.J. In the early days, Caritas mainly served refugees, helping them solve immediate problems such as food, clothing and accommodations.

As Macau society develops, the needs of the society have evolved so are the services of Caritas. The goal is to enable those who need support to become self-reliant and to make positive contributions to the society, Caritas has launched a series of support services, including services for young people, the homeless and the elderly. A series of services such as kindergartens, centres for the elderly, rehabilitation and the homelessness were created in order to foster a harmonious and stable community in Macau and helped those in need.

Caritas Macau has served the society for more than 70 years and has experienced the ups and downs of Macau. In mid-March this year, Caritas held the “71st Anniversary Charity Dinner”, serving 108 tables and over 1,000 participants. It is hoped that this event allows philanthropists, co-workers and service providers to spend a very meaningful evening together at the same time raising money for the organization.

Mr Paul Pun, Executive Director of Caritas Macau, said, “Caritas services have spanned across a wide of range of sectors such as elderly care, family, rehabilitation, children, youth education, counselling hotline, social integration, homelessness, labourers and social enterprises. It’s my wish for us to join force and address the issues the society is facing, and actively deliver social services with a people orientated mindset.
