Sands Wins PATA Gold Award for bilingual publication “In Search of Its Roots – An Illustrated History of Rua das Estalagens”

The bilingual publication “In Search of Its Roots – An Illustrated History of Rua das Estalagens”, published by Sands China Ltd, has been honored with the 2025 Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) Gold Award for Best Printed Marketing Campaign (Industry).

The accolade highlights Sands’ contributions to promoting cultural-tourism integration and preserving local heritage.

The bilingual publication forms part of Sands China’s district revitalization initiative, guided by the Macao SAR Government’s Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture and supported by the Cultural Affairs Bureau. It was compiled, translated, photographed and designed by a local professional team.

Authored by Siguo Chen with illustrations by Shirley Lu, its content meticulously documents the historical figures and community narratives of Rua das Estalagens through oral history and visual artistry.

Dr Wilfred Wong, Executive Vice Chairman of Sands China Ltd, stated, “Our initial purpose in publishing ‘In Search of Its Roots’ – part of Sands China’s revitalization initiatives for Rua das Estalagens – was to harness community strength to record the rich cultural atmosphere and unique neighborhood stories of this historic street, reignite the district’s century-old prosperity and rediscover the enduring cultural heritage of the area.”

Since 2023, Sands China has actively driven the revitalization of Rua das Estalagens. Initiatives include the “Community Revitalization Series – Entrepreneurship Recruitment Programme for Rua das Estalagens”, which attracted over 600 participants and selected seven SMEs to establish businesses there, with six now formally operational.

Concurrently, local artists were commissioned to repaint the façades of several heritage shops, breathing new life into the historic street through a fusion of tradition and creativity.

This international recognition not only affirms Sands China’s efforts in community revitalisation, but also highlights the company’s positive impact on preserving and promoting Macao’s cultural heritage in the local community.
