University of Saint Joseph hosts fundraising dinner to support international students

  • The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) hosted the International Students Solidarity Fund Fundraising Dinner.
  • The fund aims to ensure that no student is forced to abandon their education due to financial hardship.

The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) recently held the USJ International Students Solidarity Fund Fundraising Dinner at the Baccara Ballroom, Sofitel Macau at Ponte 16 on 24 January. The event attracted approximately 140 guests and raised around MOP 295,000.

This was the first public fundraising event since the establishment of the fund. Over the past three years, USJ has supported more than 90 students with tuition subsidies. Starting this year, the fund aims to bring together greater societal support to further its mission. USJ plans to make this charity gala an annual event to continuously promote education equity.

The dinner was generously supported by various sponsors, including nine Silver Sponsors , Platinum Sponsors JNV – Lawyers and Notaries and USJ Alumni Association (AAUSJ), and Gold Sponsors Articross and MSS Recruitment.

Anchor Donor KK Yeung Management Consultants Limited, led by Chairman Dr Anthony Kwok-Ki Yeung, donated HK$250,000 to the fund before the dinner. Dr Yeung, a recipient of USJ’s Honorary Doctorate of Business Administration, expressed his commitment to advancing education for underprivileged students.

The dinner featured a charity auction with 16 donated items, including artworks and photography, adding excitement to the dinner. In addition, guests were treated to vibrant cultural performances by USJ’s international students from Myanmar, the Philippines and Angola, showcasing the university’s multicultural spirit. A highlight of the evening was a song performance of “Hero” by Myanmar student Tsang, which received enthusiastic applause.

USJ pointed out that it launched the USJ International Students Solidarity Fund to continue its efforts to support underprivileged students. This initiative ensures that no student is forced to abandon their education due to financial hardship, continuing the commitment to equity and global solidarity.

For years, USJ has provided grants to students from Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Mozambique, East Timor, Myanmar and Chinese migrant communities in Macau, enabling them to study despite economic challenges.
