In celebration of “June, Month of Portugal in the Macao SAR 2026,” the Portuguese Institute of the Orient (IPOR) is hosting a special concert entitled “VOCAL JOURNEY: FOUR CENTURIES OF LYRIC MUSIC IN PORTUGUESE” on June 6th at 7:30pm at Dom Pedro V Theatre, bringing together three unique singers from Portugal, Hong Kong and Macau.
The event is hosted by IPOR and the Consulate-General of Portugal in Macau and Hong Kong and supported by the Consulate-General of Brazil in Hong Kong. It is programmed and co-produced by XCESSU Ltd and Hong Kong chamber opera cooperative OperaLab, in collaboration with the Cascais Opera International Lyric Singing Competition.
The vocal journey features Portuguese soprano Sílvia Sequeira – winner of the Cascais Opera International Singing Competition (2024), Hong Kong mezzo-soprano Ashley Chui – recipient of the 2024 BYAA Collectives American Art Elite Award, and Macau baritone Chris Kun Hang Iek, winner of the Open Vocal Category at the 11th Hong Kong International Music Festival. The singers are accompanied by Hong Kong-based French pianist Arièle Zanini -principal pianist of the City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong.
The journey weaves together 18th and early-19th century Luso-Brazilian composers, including Marcos Portugal, António José da Silva and José Maurício Nunes Garcia. The turn-of-the-century composers Alberto Nepomuceno and Alfredo Keil are represented, while the 20th and 21st century songs originate in Brazil and Portugal, from composers including Heitor Villa-Lobos, Fernando Lopes-Graça, Alexandre Delgado and Macau’s Fr. Áureo e Castro.
