- Sands Cares Ambassadors visited Sun Yat-sen’s Chong Sai Pharmacy on Rua das Estalagens.
- The trip aimed to help participants gain a deeper understanding of Sun Yat-sen’s historical imprint on Macau.
Over 30 Sands Cares Ambassadors and their family members took part in a guided tour at the end of April of the Former Chong Sai Pharmacy at Rua das Estalagens – part of Sands China’s activities commemorating the 100th anniversary of Dr Sun Yat-sen’s passing.
Founded in 1893 by Dr Sun at No. 80 Rua das Estalagens, the site marks one of the first Chinese-owned Western medicine clinics in Macau.
Organized to deepen understanding of Sun Yat-sen’s historical impact on Macau, the visit began with a docent-led introduction followed by a walkthrough of the exhibition space. Participants learned about Dr Sun’s connection to Macau, his pursuit of national independence and the architectural heritage of traditional shophouses.
The group also explored local shops along Rua das Estalagens, including six businesses established through Sands China’s Entrepreneurship Recruitment Programme. Since launching a year ago, the initiative has revitalized the street with restaurants, cafés and bakeries, reflecting the area’s historic charm and modern appeal.
Dr Wilfred Wong, Executive Vice Chairman of Sands China Ltd, said the event was a meaningful blend of cultural exploration and community engagement.
“This was not only a meaningful journey of exploring the past and the new,” he said, “but also reflects Sands China’s active promotion of cultural heritage and community integration.”
In March, Sands China released a bilingual book titled In Search of Its Roots – An Illustrated History of Rua das Estalagens.
Developed through community collaboration, the book captures the street’s heritage through oral histories and is available at the Macau Public Library and online at this link.
