South Korean artist Shin Min wins inaugural “MGM Discoveries Art Prize”

  • MGM and Art Basel Hong Kong presented the first winner of the “MGM Discoveries Art Prize”.
  • The award aims to foster artistic diversity and connect Hong Kong, Macau and the world through iconic cultural events.

The inaugural “MGM Discoveries Art Prize” was presented in late March, with South Korean artist Shin Min – represented by P21(Seoul) – emerging as the winner. The award, a collaboration between MGM and Art Basel Hong Kong, aims to recognize emerging international artists for their originality and innovation in the arts, while also enhancing their visibility in the global art community.

Kenneth Feng, President and Executive Director of MGM China, remarked that both MGM and Art Basel Hong Kong share a common vision of promoting the development of global art and culture. He explained that in establishing the award, the partnership is intended to discover and support creative new artists, offering them greater opportunities and encouragement for their artistic development. Additionally, he stated that the award would help foster stronger connections between Hong Kong, Macau and the international art community, contributing to the expansion of Macau’s cultural exchange network.

The jury for the inaugural “MGM Discoveries Art Prize” consisted of five internationally renowned art and culture experts. Shin Min stood out among many other talented artists for her groundbreaking installation art piece, Ew! There is hair in the food!!.

Featured in the “Discoveries Sector” section, which showcases recent works by emerging artists in solo presentations, Shin’s work caught the attention of the jury for its powerful symbolism and personal narrative, addressing social norms and systemic injustices. The piece explores the harsh realities faced by service workers and general female laborers.

As the winner, Shin Min received a US$50,000 prize alongside her representing gallery, P21(Seoul). She has also been invited by MGM to Macau for exhibition and artistic exchange events.

MGM said it continues to support diverse international art and cultural initiatives. During the Art Basel Hong Kong event, MGM hosted a special guided tour for nearly 50 cultural and educational leaders from Macau, providing them with an opportunity to appreciate world-class artworks and stay informed on the latest trends in the global art scene, injecting new inspiration and momentum into Macau’s cultural development.
