A groundbreaking fusion of digital art, interactive technology and archaeological narratives has arrived in the heart of Macau with “BRILLIANT STARS – THE CIVILIZATION OF ANCIENT SHU Immersive Digital Art Experience” debuting at Fantasy Box, MGM MACAU’s new multi-purpose cultural venue. Running from 24 April to 24 June, the exhibition breathes new life into the millennia-old Ancient Shu civilization through immersive storytelling, ultra-high-definition visuals and interactive technology.
Jointly organized by the Macao Foundation, the Executive Committee of the Hengqin Guangdong-Macao In-depth Cooperation Zone and China Poly Group, and co-organized by the Civil Affairs Bureau of the Hengqin Guangdong-Macao In-depth Cooperation Zone, Poly Culture Group and MGM, the exhibition marks a significant cultural initiative aimed at deepening regional cooperation.
The opening ceremony, held on 23 April, drew more than 120 distinguished guests from Macau’s government, cultural, education and business sectors. Notable attendees included Huang Liuquan, Deputy Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao Special Administrative Region; Wu Zhiliang, Chairman of the Administrative Committee of the Macao Foundation; Su Kun, Deputy Director of the Hengqin Guangdong-Macao In-depth Cooperation Zone Executive Committee; Liu Juncai, Standing Committee Member of the Party Committee and Deputy General Manager of China Poly Group; Kenneth Feng, President and Executive Director of MGM China Holdings Limited; Leong Wai Man, President of the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao SAR Government; and Xu Bei, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and Director of Poly Culture Group.
Bridging civilizations with innovation
In his remarks, Wu Zhiliang highlighted the exhibition’s ability to connect ancient cultural heritage with modern creativity. “True civilization”, he explained, “does not lie in mere nostalgic revival but rather thrives when traditional cultural legacies resonate with modern technology, creating new vitality in ancient legacies.”
Using 12K ultra-high-definition visual technologies, immersive design and interactive storytelling, the exhibition reimagines the world of Sanxingdui and Jinsha cultures for modern audiences, bridging time and space from the epicenter of Chinese archaeology to the multicultural hub of Macau.
Su Kun emphasized the strategic role of Macau and Hengqin in realizing “One Country, Two Systems” through a “Macau + Hengqin” model. The exhibition, he noted, reflects the pioneering “One Exhibition, Two Locations” concept: while Hengqin hosted the “Treasures of Ancient Shu – Sanxingdui and Jinsha” artefact display showcasing tangible cultural relics, Macau now presents a digital counterpart that continues the narrative. The Hengqin exhibition, which concluded on 24 April, attracted over 300,000 visitors, 20% of whom came from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. Its continuation in Macau extends the impact and fosters deeper cultural exchange.
Liu Juncai underscored Poly Group’s role in revitalizing and reinterpreting traditional cultural legacies through technological and artistic innovation. As Macau advances its economic diversification strategy, initiatives like the “BRILLIANT STARS” exhibition, he said, not only celebrate the richness of Chinese heritage but also actively contribute to enhancing cross-regional cultural integration, reinforcing the city’s role in the Greater Bay Area’s cultural ecosystem.
Fantasy Box debuts with a multi-sensory cultural experience
“BRILLIANT STARS” marks the debut showcase of Fantasy Box, MGM MACAU’s new multi-purpose cultural venue on its second floor. Outfitted with three ultra-high-definition LED screens spanning 500 square meters, the venue transforms the ancient world into a dynamic digital realm. Visitors journey through vivid depictions of natural landscapes, ceremonial life and archaeological treasures of the Ancient Shu civilization, while 12K macro imaging technology reveals stunning details of bronze masks, golden artefacts and intricate craftsmanship.
Supported by institutions such as the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao SAR Government, the Sanxingdui Museum and the Jinsha Site Museum, the exhibition blends scientific rigor with artistic expression. The result is a multi-sensory journey that reinterprets archaeological knowledge in an engaging and accessible format.
The exhibition unfolds across four thematic zones. Visitors begin in the “Galaxy Tunnel”, guided by star maps believed to reflect the cosmology of the Ancient Shu people. This leads to “Brilliant Sun and Stars”, a 12K digital art film showcasing the natural landscape, daily life and belief systems through digital artistry.
In the second session, “Awakening National Treasures”, interactive technology allows guests to engage with animated relics, bringing the past to life in a tactile way.
The third section, “12K Macro Views of National Treasures”, zooms in on iconic artefacts, including intricate craftsmanship of bronze masks, golden masks and other relics with extraordinary visual fidelity. The final stop, “Cultural and Creative Space – Ornament Corridor”, offers a hands-on cultural retail experience, inviting guests to explore and purchase themed products inspired by the exhibition.
More than a visual spectacle, “BRILLIANT STARS – THE CIVILIZATION OF ANCIENT SHU” represents a living dialogue between past and future. Through a combination of immersive storytelling, archaeological insight and creative innovation, the exhibition introduces audiences to the beauty and mystery of the Ancient Shu while inspiring a new wave of public engagement with China’s historical narrative.
Free and open to the public, the exhibition is expected to draw visitors from across Macau and the Greater Bay Area, including students, cultural professionals and international tourists. As Macau strengthens its position as a regional cultural hub, this initiative demonstrates how ancient legacies can illuminate the future – when art, heritage and technology converge.
