- Karate joins the 2025 National Games as a mass event, hosted by Macau.
- With Hengqin’s development, karate venues may one day support better training conditions and boost sports development in Macau.
Macau’s karate athletes prove that with grit and heart, they can shine despite limited resources. The sport’s inclusion as a mass event in the 2025 National Games marks a milestone, sparking excitement among local athletes and martial arts fans.

Karate is gaining ground in Macau. Children aged five and up can join beginner classes, with fees under MOP$100 per hour – affordable for many parents. But private venue rental (around MOP$350 per hour) remains a major hurdle. Without government support, long-term development is difficult and many children may miss out.
Athlete development faces challenges. Macau lacks a professional athlete system; most karate athletes are students or working adults juggling training with studies or jobs. Some companies don’t offer paid leave for competitions, forcing athletes to take unpaid leave and shoulder financial pressure. Parents often prioritize academics, leading to high dropout rates in secondary school.

Despite these challenges, Macau athletes deliver. Kuok Kin Hang won silver in the men’s individual kata at the last National Games – Macau’s first-ever medal. This year, he joins Fong Man Hou and Cheang Pei Lok in the men’s team kata squad, aiming for further success.
Macau Karate Federation President Che Kuong Im expressed his gratitude, stating, “We are deeply thankful to the Macau government and Head of the Preparatory Office in Macao, Pun Weng-kun. Their support in venue arrangements and policy initiatives has allowed us to continue promoting this sport despite our limited resources.

“We hope that in future, resources can reach regional associations and coaching systems to strengthen training, so children can enjoy all that the karate has to offer.”
From community outreach to national competition, Macau karate continues to grow. With support from athletes, industry and government, the sport showcases local talent. With Hengqin’s development, its venues may one day support better training conditions and boost sports development in Macau.
