2025 Q1: Welcome to the latest edition of our quarterly publication

This quarter, Macau’s community tourism scene has been buzzing with life. From heritage walks to celebrations and festivals, the focus has been on creating authentic experiences that bring locals and visitors closer together.

The Lunar New Year celebrations earlier this quarter transformed the city into a vibrant display of colors and tradition. Several “spring markets” were set up across the city, including the highly anticipated biannual Tap Seac Spring Market which has been running since 2008 and where visitors and residents enjoyed the lively atmosphere and the taste of festive and traditional specialties. Streets came alive with drums and the beats of lion dances.

The Macau government plays a vital role in supporting community tourism by creating opportunities for small businesses and residents to benefit from the tourism sector. For instance, the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) has launched several initiatives to promote sustainable and inclusive tourism. This includes organizing workshops to train local guides and small business owners, and empowering communities to share their stories and traditions. These efforts ensure that the benefits of tourism are distributed more widely, reaching everyone rather than just a select few.

Despite the positive momentum, the path to sustainable community tourism is not without its challenges. Balancing high-end tourism with community-based initiatives can be tricky. The rise in tourism has also raised concerns among residents about its impact on quality of life and the authenticity of local culture. Some locals worry about the effects of increased foot traffic on their neighborhoods, while others are eager to see more opportunities for business.

The New Macau stories this quarter have shown that community tourism isn’t just about attracting visitors – it’s about fostering connections, celebrating heritage and building a future where everyone has a seat at the table. At least one thing is clear: in Macau, community life is the heart of the city.
