Melco brings MotoSurf World Championship to Macau for the first time

  • Melco and MMSA conclude Macau’s first ever MotoSurf World.
  • The event also introduced youth to MotoSurf, supporting local talent development.

Co-organized by Melco Resorts & Entertainment and the Macau MotoSurf Association (MMSA), the inaugural MotoSurf World Championship made waves in late November, marking its successful debut in Macau.

The “2024 UIM Macao Grand Prix MotoSurf World Championship Finale” offered an electrifying water sports experience for audiences in Macau and the Greater Bay Area. More than 120 elite athletes from 22 countries and regions, including the Czech Republic, China, South Korea and Macau, competed, demonstrating remarkable speed and skill on the water.

Czech athlete Eliška Matoušková captured the women’s championship title during the Macau selection round, securing the first qualification spot for the 2025 Chengdu World Games.

MotoSurf, one of the fastest-growing water sports globally, has garnered widespread attention since its emergence in 2012. Officially recognized by the Union Internationale Motonautique (UIM) in 2019, the sport uses compact two-stroke fuel engines or electric motors, requiring minimal environmental and auxiliary equipment compared to traditional surfing. Founded in 1922, UIM serves as the governing body for global motorboating sports and is recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

The sport’s inclusion in the 12th edition of The World Games, set for August 2025 in Chengdu, represents a historic milestone as powerboating makes its debut in the prestigious event, underscoring MotoSurf’s rapid evolution.

Melco and MMSA also hosted a related special event at Hac Sa Beach in collaboration with YMCA Macau. Local youth were introduced to MotoSurf through engaging sessions led by professional MMSA teams, covering the sport’s history, technical aspects, racecourse design and safety measures. Participants also enjoyed hands-on trial sessions, immersing themselves in the excitement and energy of MotoSurf.

Clarence Chung, Board Director of Melco, emphasized its ongoing commitment to promoting Macau’s cultural and sports industries, expressing pride in bringing the internationally acclaimed MotoSurf World Championship to the city for the first time. The company affirmed its support for the SAR Government’s economic diversification initiatives by hosting world-class sports events, which it believes will leverage the synergy of “Tourism + Sports” to further Macau’s development as a global “City of Sports”.

Irene Nga Ieng Ho, Chairman of the Macau Motosurf Association, highlighted the MotoSurf World Championship Finale as a dynamic addition to Macau’s sports calendar. The association noted that the event showcased the thrilling potential of MotoSurf while demonstrating Macau’s capability to host premier water sports events. It also emphasized the aim of positioning Macau as a unique water sports destination on the global stage, enhancing its reputation as a vibrant hub of culture, tourism and sports.

The three-day “Melco Style Presents: 2024 UIM Macao Grand Prix MotoSurf World Championship Finale” event was co-presented by Union Internationale Motonautique (UIM) and Wuling Technology Ltd.
