The award ceremony for the “2024 GEG Community Caring Program – Technology Care Innovation Design Competition” took place in mid-February. Organized by the “Peng On Tung” Tele-assistance Service and title sponsored by Galaxy Entertainment Group (GEG), the competition attracted nearly 70 student participants.

In this smart assistive device design competition, participants created designs based on the needs of the elderly, fully demonstrating their creativity and social responsibility. Each participant worked hard to design products aimed at improving the lives of the elderly. This was not only an effective application of technology but also a significant contribution to society.

GEG has continuously supported the event for nine consecutive years. This year, GEG supported participants not only with training in the design and practical application of assistive devices, but also the organization of visits to local elderly residents. In January, over 100 students and GEG Volunteer Team members attended the “Technological Support for Seniors Living Alone” event, where they received training on assistive device design, communication techniques with the elderly and the proper use of “Peng On Tung” tele-assistance devices. Afterward, the participants visited 60 elderly individuals to interact with them and better understand their daily lives and needs, which helped inform the design of more innovative and practical devices.

Ultimately, five students from the Sacred Heart Canossian College (Chinese Section) Macau won the competition’s championship. The runners-up were four students from the Our Lady of Fatima Girls’ School, while third place was awarded to three participants from the “Youth Science and Technology Village” program, co-organized by GEG, the Education and Youth Development Bureau and the Macao Science Center.

In his speech, Pun Ka Lun, Manager of the “Peng On Tung” Tele-Assistance Services Centre, highlighted that since its inception, the “GEG Community Caring Program” has been committed to promoting the spirit of “caring for the community”.

He referred that, in response to Chief Executive Sam Hou Fai’s philosophy of “empowering social services through technology,” GEG is the first integrated tourism and leisure enterprise to encourage young people to engage with and care for elderly individuals in the community with technology.

“Through the inaugural ‘Technology Care Innovative Design Competition’, we aim to integrate technology with social services to enhance the quality of life for seniors while encouraging youth to pay attention to and care for those around them, especially the elderly”, he said. “We firmly believe that technology can not only bring convenience to life but also serve as a bridge for conveying love and care, injecting new vitality into society.”

Since 2016, GEG has been the title sponsor of the “GEG Community Caring Program” and has supported the “Peng On Tung” Tele-assistance Service since 2010. In 2024, GEG donated MOP 200,000 to the UGAMM Peng On Tung Charity Foundation, actively supported a series of activities to help identify community members in need of services and assisted them in connecting with social resources to further contribute to building a harmonious and inclusive society.

Since its launch, the “GEG Community Caring Program” has brought together more than 1,350 businesses and merchants to form the “Care Alliance”. Over 3,100 volunteers have participated, reaching more than 60,000 residents and identifying and supporting 230 “hidden elderly” and other individuals with service needs. Moving forward, GEG said it will continue to collaborate with all sectors of society and, through practical actions, convey care to the community while promoting the spirit of neighbourly assistance and care.
