Taipa Village Cultural Association recently launched a photography exhibition titled, “THE FLAVORS of SICHUAN: A Tribute to the Art of Sichuan Cuisine”. The exhibition features 34 stunning works by American photographer David Hartung, presented in both color and black-and-white styles. These images delicately capture the historical context and everyday essence of Sichuan’s culinary culture.

Hartung launched his Sichuan photography project in 2019, which was interrupted by the pandemic before resuming in 2023. He made multiple trips to Chengdu, focusing his photographs on chefs, tea masters, farmers, market vendors, tofu makers, noodle artisans, pickled vegetable makers and fermented bean sauce craftspeople to capture the history, geography and cultural landscape of Sichuan cuisine.
These works will be published with the current exhibition as a large-format coffee table book titled THE FLAVORS of SICHUAN: A Tribute to the Art of Sichuan Cuisine.

Hartung’s photographic journey began in Seoul, South Korea in the late 1980s. He later resided in Taipei, Shanghai and Macau, witnessing the social transformation and economic rise of Asian cities. In 2008, he established his base in Macau, co-founding Destination Macau and becoming a founding member of Tasting Kitchen magazine.
For years, Hartung has focused on documenting Asia’s rapidly changing cultural landscapes. His work has been featured in international publications including TIME magazine, The New York Times, Newsweek, Forbes and Businessweek.

Over the past decade, he has dedicated himself to culinary photography, capturing extraordinary dishes, the essence of chefs and the rich layers of food culture through a distinctive lens. This Sichuan project stands as his tribute to Chinese culinary heritage, inviting international audiences on a sensory journey.
Running from 24 September to 26 November, this two-month exhibition invites visitors to experience the artistic allure of Sichuan flavors at the Taipa Village Art Space.
