Every year after Chinese New Year, many decorative items become garbage, impacting the environment – especially lai see red packets which become worthless after being opened. To combat this and protect the environment, the Environmental Protection Bureau has been organizing a “re-use and recycle of Lai See packet” activity annually since 2017.
The campaign was launched by the Environmental Protection Bureau this year on 14 January. From that day, citizens could request reused lai see packets from 58 distribution points in Macau.
In addition, from 27 January to 12 February, the Environmental Protection Bureau cooperated with government departments, local associations, hotels, banks, schools, merchants and residential buildings to establish recycling points for lai see packets.
Macau residents can drop off intact used lai see packets to campaign collection points. In addition, the Environmental Protection Bureau also advises people not to discard unused red packets, preferring residents to keep the packets for future years in order to practice environmental protection.
The Environmental Protection Bureau said, “In the past six years, the Environmental Protection Bureau has recalled around 11.4 million lai see packets of which 3.15 million were reusable.”
