Organized by World Vision Macau Branch, and with Macau Coca-Cola Beverage Co Ltd as major sponsor, the “Macao Famine 2023” event officially opened in February. This year’s theme is “Extreme Hunger”, and the funds raised will support locations in Africa facing food shortages.
World Vision Macau Branch has adopted the “Extreme Hunger” theme this year to appeal to the citizens of Macau to pay attention to the threat posed by the global food crisis. In recent years, the outbreak of the pandemic and the war in Ukraine have exacerbated the crisis, which sees the continent of Africa most severely affected.
Amelia Che, director of World Vision Macau Branch, said, “Africa is currently the region with the largest increase in the number of hungry people in the world. The total number of hungry people there has reached 278 million. On average, one out of every five people suffers from hunger.
“Many hungry children suffer from malnutrition, and some children even become victims of child labor or child marriage in order to feed themselves. They are waiting for our help.”
Macao Famine 2023 will run from February to June, and various activities will be held, including flag sales, a 10-hour famine camp and school famines. The money raised from the event will be donated to places in Africa facing food shortages, providing clean drinking water, food and livelihood assistance to local hungry children and families.
