To commemorate World Red Cross Day, the Macau Red Cross held a celebration event in Taipa Flower City Park on 8 May and set up various game booths to pass on first aid skills to the public, as well as displaying disaster relief tents, non-emergency ambulance and associated equipment.
The World Red Cross Day concept originally appeared after the First World War. In 1922 a three-day truce to promote peace during Easter was declared in Czechoslovakia (now the Czech Republic and Slovakia). The initiative was later known as the Red Cross Truce and had a major impact on the public in promoting humanitarianism. On 8 May 1948, the Red Cross Day was established and celebrated globally. 8 May was the birthday of Henry Dunant, the founder of the International Red Cross, and became designated as World Red Cross Day.
As a humanitarian support agency, the Macau Red Cross has been working hard for the welfare of people in Macau. The theme of this year’s World Red Cross Day is “Everything we do comes from the heart”. On World Red Cross Day, the Macau Red Cross delivered service awards to members who successfully completed the youth corps training as a reward to those who actively participated in the voluntary work.
Eddie Wong Yue Kai, President of the General Assembly of Macau Red Cross, pointed out that Macau Red Cross services have resumed at normal levels and he hopes that this event will enable the community to better understand the various types of services provided by the Red Cross.
Wong said, “The Macau Red Cross will serve and contribute wholeheartedly to promote the continuous development of the humanitarian cause. This is also an important mission of the International Red Cross Movement. We have always adhered to this philosophy.”
