Art Macao 2023 kicked off last Friday

In order to promote Macau as a World Center of Tourism and Leisure, the SAR government re-launched the large-scale international cultural and art event “Art Macao” this year. The event has now been held for four continuous years, and this year it’s titled “Art Macao: Macao International Art Biennale 2023”. More than 200 artists from more than 20 countries and regions will participate in the international event.

Art Macao 2023 is guided by the Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture, hosted by the Cultural Affairs Bureau, and supported by large local enterprises. Several foreign general consulates from Hong Kong and Macau as well as mainland and local universities were invited to participate. The launch event was held at 5pm on Friday 28 July at the Macao Museum of Art, and the main exhibition and local artist invitational exhibition opened at the same time.

Art Macao 2023 exhibitions will run until October. With a theme of “The Statistics of Fortune”, it explores the interactions between science and religion as inseparable elements. A total of 30 art exhibitions, including artist invitational exhibitions and local curations, will be spread across all regions of Macau.

To provide a diverse exchange platform and encourage the creation of contemporary art in Macau, the event has set up a “Local Curatorial Project” to select curatorial proposals from local teams through open calls. The selected proposal will receive an exhibition production fee of up to MOP 500,000.
