The 1st Macao International Shorts Film Festival jointly organized by the Macau Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC) and Galaxy Entertainment Group (GEG) will take place from 23 to 30 March. The festival will feature a variety of events, including an opening ceremony and opening screenings, screening activities, themed workshops, master lectures, as well as a closing and award ceremony. It is aimed at establishing an international platform for the exchange and exhibition of short films, while promoting Macau’s film and television productions abroad, according to the Cultural Affairs Bureau.

This year’s festival comprises four main sections, namely “Macao Shorts”, “New Voices from Horizon”, “Director In Focus” and
“Special Screenings”, with a panel of professional filmmakers from Europe, mainland China and Southeast Asia serving as judges. 10 Macau short films have already been selected on the shortlist and will compete for the “Best Macao Short” Award.

More than 20 innovative productions from emerging directors from across the world — including mainland China, Hong Kong, East Asia, Southeast Asia, Europe, and America — will compete for four awards: the “Best Short Film”, the “Best Technical Contribution Award”, the “Best Director Award” and the “Innovative Storytelling Award”.

Leong Wai Man, President of the Cultural Affairs Bureau, introduced the Macao International Shorts Film Festival as the first international film event organized by the Macau government to have a focus on short films.

“The festival aims to foster collaboration between local film and television talent and international counterparts, while introducing audiences to diverse international and Asian films and showcasing the versatility and vitality of short films, and inspiring and connecting filmmakers and audiences worldwide,” she stated.

Philip Cheng, Director of GEG, said, “The Group is honored to co-organize the first Macao International Short Film Festival with the Cultural Affairs Bureau, creating an innovative international platform for short films and exhibitions in Macau, supporting local film and television talents to go global, promoting the development of Macau’s film and television production industry, and contributing to the development of Macau as a ‘City of Performing Arts’.”
