Two emerging artists bring Portuguese flair to local neighborhoods with mural creations

  • Two exciting local artists have created murals in Macau’s old district.
  • The murals transport viewers through time to experience the charms of old Macau.

Taipa Village Cultural Association has teamed up once again with Macau’s Cultural Affairs Bureau, inviting two local young artists to create murals in the old district, injecting new artistic energy into the “Insightful Cultural Excursion in the Inner Harbour Area and Taipa”.

Travessa Da Assunção

The murals aim to bring the Inner Harbour alive with memories of a fishing village, while the Taipa Escada Do Coxo has been transformed into a Portuguese-style gallery, complementing the Southern European art of Travessa da Boa Vista. Residents and visitors are transported through time, reliving the charm of old Macau as the murals vividly showcase its unique southern European romance and Portuguese flair.

The two talented artists, Vitorino Vong and Jane Ieng, are graduates of the Macau Polytechnic Institute with bachelor’s degrees in visual arts.

Barra Square

Using the walls of Travessa Da Assunção as their canvas, they have recreated scenes of the old fishing village – fishermen returning to shore and residents bustling with their daily chores. At Barra Square, a 50-meter-long mural integrates elements of the fishing industry, traditional Macau souvenirs and UNESCO World Heritage architecture. By blending historical photographs with imaginative creativity, the artists employ techniques such as contrast and metaphor to deliver a feast of art that balances realism and innovation.

Over at the Taipa Escada Do Coxo, the artists have adorned the walls with vibrant sardines and complemented the steps with Portuguese tile patterns, creating a multi-layered mural rich in European flair.

Meanwhile, Travessa da Boa Vista shows off a clever use of height to build a three-dimensional effect, where playful cats are vividly depicted, adding a touch of charm and leisure to the old neighborhood.

The two artists will soon unveil new works in the Horta da Mitra, where residents and visitors alike can look forward to more of their captivating creations.
