Organized by the Science Education Promotion Association of Macau and title-sponsored by Galaxy Entertainment Group (GEG) through the “GEG Technology Development Promotion Program”, the inaugural “GEG Astronomy Cup – The 1st Macau International Youth Astronomy Competition” is now open for registration, with applications closing on 21 March.

Serving as the Macau regional qualifier for the Chinese Ministry of Education’s whitelist event, the “Chinese National Astronomy Olympiad”, the competition aims to promote astronomical education, inspire young peoples’ enthusiasm for exploring the universe and foster international exchanges by welcoming participants from across Asia.

Through title sponsoring the competition, GEG hopes to actively promote youth science education, create a diverse learning platform, enhance local students’ understanding of cutting-edge national technological developments and contribute to nurturing more outstanding young talents in science and technology in Macau.

The competition comprises three categories: Astronomy Knowledge, Astronomy Photography and Astronomy Research Projects, covering theoretical knowledge, creative skills and academic research.

The Astronomy Knowledge category, divided into senior and junior groups, will assess participants’ understanding of astronomical facts, recent discoveries and observation skills through simultaneous online and offline formats. The Astronomy Photography category requires entrants to submit works photographed within the past three years, accompanied by relevant technical details. The Astronomy Research Projects category calls for research reports or papers completed after January 2024, with teams limited to five members each.

Each category will award gold, silver, bronze and merit prizes. Gold and silver winners from Macau will advance to represent the region at the “Chinese National Astronomy Olympiad” finals scheduled in Shantou this May. Participants will receive complimentary pre-competition training and travel support.
