USJ Faculty of Business and Law’s 2025 “FBL day” promotes sustainable development in the region

  • The event explored innovative collaborative solutions for urban regeneration and inclusive development.

The Faculty of Business and Law (FBL) at the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) successfully held its 2025 “FBL Day” on 28 March at the Kent Wong Gallery, themed “Partnerships for the Goals”. The event, which aims to promote sustainable development in Macau and the region, was organized by the graduating class of the Year 4 bachelor program students.

The event brought together industry leaders, social entrepreneurs, academics and students to explore collaborative solutions for urban regeneration and inclusive development, showcasing projects aligned with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Supported by Oxfam Macao, over 150 university students from Hong Kong and Macau attended.

Sio Chong Meng, Chairman of Lek Hang Group, shared the transformation of New Central Hotel, a 1928 landmark revitalized into modern luxury while preserving cultural heritage. With a 90% occupancy rate, the project bridged Macau’s past and future, injecting economic vitality into the city center.

Dr Ronald Musizvingoza from the United Nations University Institute in Macau discussed the role of synthetic data in inclusive AI, highlighting its potential to mitigate gender and regional biases in healthcare and employment, advancing equity for disadvantaged groups.

In terms of social enterprise practices, the Chairman of Wofoo S.I.T.E. Leo Chan shared how his Good Values platform facilitates cross-border collaboration, while MedMind Technology’s Nathan Hui discussed how his company focuses on elderly well-being and mental health, demonstrating how technology can expand the potential of social impact.

Jing Chunying, President of Zhichai Innovation Research Institute, proposed a design-led urban regeneration strategy to transform old industrial areas into economic and cultural hubs. Highlighting successful examples like Guangdong Industrial Design City and Meitao Bay Area, she stressed the significance of environmental protection and community revitalization.

The event underscored the importance of cross-sector collaboration in sustainable development, showcasing examples like historic building revitalization, AI ethics and social enterprise innovation to prove that diverse partnerships are vital for an inclusive future.
