MGM partners with local tech firm to launch playing card recycling solution

  • MGM and local tech firm pioneer playing card recycling solution.
  • The solution is expected to transform approximately 3,000 tons of used playing cards annually into packaging materials.

MGM has announced a pioneering sustainability initiative in collaboration with local tech enterprise Fnetlink Technology Company Limited. The project introduces Macau’s first full-cycle playing card recycling solution, transforming used cards into high-quality recycled fibers.

Expected to process approximately 3,000 tons of playing cards annually, the system enables the production of eco-friendly packaging materials while achieving a 100% local recycling rate. MGM said the initiative makes it the first integrated resort in Macau to implement a fully localized recycling system for playing cards.

This latest innovation builds on the two parties’ 2023 collaboration, which saw the development of the world’s first automated intelligent card-shredding system. The new solution applies advanced dry fiber regeneration technology, allowing the shredded cards to be repurposed on-site – without the use of water – into sustainable materials such as recycled boards and filler. The process significantly reduces both solid waste and carbon emissions.

Keith Lei, Senior Vice President of Human Resources and Sustainability at MGM, said the initiative gives used playing cards a second life while driving Macau’s low-carbon and diversified economic development.

“Partnering with a local tech company highlights the role innovation can play in driving green transformation,” he said. “It sets a new standard for sustainable growth in the integrated resort industry.”

“Moving forward, MGM will continue to explore advanced technologies to support China’s dual carbon goals and the Long-term Decarbonization Strategy of Macau proposed by the local government, helping push the city toward a more sustainable future.”

The signing ceremony took place at the 2025 Macao International Environmental Co-operation Forum & Exhibition (MIECF), with government and industry representatives in attendance.
