Nongovernmental organization (NGO) Sustaincia has joined the Sands Cares Accelerator, to perfect the use of its advanced technology with the goal of converting food waste items into useful products.
The Sands Cares Accelerator is a three-year membership program which helps nonprofits advance their community impact possibilities, with Sustaincia leveraging its technology and social affairs to encourage sustainable development.
As part of its goal, Sustaincia is converting food waste from bakery items, rice and cooking oil into useful products, as well as establishing a community lab as a center for tech innovation and research around food waste valorization, creating opportunities for both local entrepreneurs and scientists.
The laboratory brings together partners and members from diverse academic and industrial backgrounds, including co-founder Dr Bashir Saidu and Collab researchers Rana Elromh and Bryan Lee, aiming to create an entirely new and inclusive industry while furthering Macau’s environmental betterment and sustainability.
“Las Vegas Sands and Sands China are providing us with vital resources to realize our vision for improving food waste processes through advanced technology, while driving business and job prospects to further sustainable impact,” said Terence Lee, President of Sustaincia.
“Beyond having a solid vision to improve food waste management in Macau, Sustaincia was a great selection for our program because of its alignment with our own sustainable food initiatives,” said Ron Reese, Senior Vice President of Global Communications and Corporate Affairs at Las Vegas Sands Corp.
Sustaincia is the second Macau NGO to join the Sands Cares Accelerator in Macau, an initiative inspired by the philanthropic spirit of Las Vegas Sands’ founder Sheldon G. Adelson.
