The drama and Cantonese Opera version of “Dream Shadows: The Peony Pavilion” was performed at Galaxy Auditorium at the Galaxy International Convention Center in early November. Organized by the Macau Cultural Resources Association and supported by Galaxy Entertainment Group (GEG), the production celebrated the rich inheritance of intangible cultural heritage and artistic innovation of the Greater Bay Area through the distinctive medium of Cantonese Opera.
The performance marked the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China and the 25th anniversary of Macau’s return to the motherland. It featured an ensemble of accomplished Cantonese Opera artists, including civil and military role performers, leading actresses and senior male actors from across the Greater Bay Area. The show highlighted the region’s profound cultural legacy and creative achievements through the unique artistry of Cantonese Opera. Additionally, GEG invited students from Pui Ching Middle School and the Macao Conservatory, along with elders from the Peng On Tung Tele-Assistance Services Centre and members of the GEG Volunteer Team, to watch the performance, thereby promoting the community’s understanding of Cantonese opera and promoting traditional Chinese culture.
As part of its support through the “GEG Venue Partnership Pilot Program”, GEG supported the show to take place at the over-600-seat Galaxy Auditorium, which is equipped with advanced audio-visual systems and cutting-edge acoustics. Moreover, GEG supported the extension of the initiative to local schools. At Pui Ching Middle School Macau, a cultural exchange lecture was held, and a workshop was conducted at the performance venue, where the Peony Pavilion producer Ally Li and playwright Zhang Yuanyuan shared their insights and experiences in drama creation with students.
Li commented, “This production represents a bold exploration of cultural innovation. We hope it inspires more young people to understand and appreciate traditional culture.”
Through this campus outreach initiative, GEG hopes to enrich local youths’ understanding of traditional Chinese culture, cultivate a deeper cultural identity among young people and support Macau’s designation as a “Base for Exchange and Cooperation where Chinese Culture is the Mainstream and Diverse Cultures Coexist”.
