Sands China Donates MOP 10 million to Support Earthquake Relief in Gansu

Jishishan in Gansu Province suffered a severe earthquake in December. Following the terrible news, Sands China promptly announced a donation of MOP 10 million to support local earthquake relief efforts.

The 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck Jishishan in China’s Gansu Province on 18 December 2023. The earthquake caused extensive damage to roads and infrastructure and triggered landslides. Due to the disaster area being located in a high-altitude region, the cold weather posed challenges to rescue and subsequent relief efforts. The post-earthquake search and rescue operations at the site were concluded in late December, and the focus has shifted to the resettlement of affected residents and the treatment of the injured.

Sands China announced their donation on 20 December 2023, just two days after the catastrophic event. The donation was made through the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao SAR to Gansu Province, to be used for emergency relief measures and post-disaster recovery efforts.

Dr Wilfred Wong, President of Sands China Ltd, said, “Sands China is deeply saddened by [the] earthquake in Gansu province and stands in heartfelt solidarity with those affected. We offer our sincere condolences and hope that our contribution will help expedite the recovery and rebuilding of the impacted communities, bringing comfort and support to our compatriots during this difficult time.”

Sands China has a long history of making substantial donations to assist in relief efforts following natural disasters in Macau and the mainland.
