Sands China organizes third consecutive Sands Cares Global Food Kit Build

  • The event was initiated by Sands China’s parent company, Las Vegas Sands.
  • The company’s integrated resorts in Macau and Singapore joined forces to prepare food kits for those in need.

Over 280 volunteers from Sands China and senior volunteers from Caritas Macau’s Centro de Cuidados Especiais Longevidade participated in the annual ‘Sands Cares Global Food Kit Build’ at The Venetian Macao’s Cotai Expo on 25 June. Together, they assembled 3,000 food packs to provide food assistance to those in need in the local community.

Initiated by Sands China’s parent company, Las Vegas Sands, this year’s global volunteer event was held at the company’s integrated resorts in Macau and Singapore, where a certain number of food kits were prepared to be delivered to those in need in their respective communities.

This event marks the third consecutive year that Sands China, in collaboration with local community partner Caritas Macau, has prepared food packs for elderly residents, people with disabilities, impoverished families and food bank recipients in Macau. The 3,000 food packs, weighing a total of 21 tons, each contain 18 items including oil, rice, macaroni, canned food, biscuits and more.

Sands Care Ambassadors will also visit Caritas Macau social service centers in July and August to help distribute the food kits to those in need.

“This event represents one of our most important contributions to the Macau community, as our team members once again demonstrated their commitment to the mission of Caritas Macau, helping to ensure that everyone in Macao has access to food,” said Dr Wilfred Wong, Executive Vice Chairman of Sands China. “It’s incredible to see our team members work together for this cause, especially because we join hands with our sister property Marina Bay Sands in Singapore in making a larger impact on this critical issue.”

Paul Pun Chi Meng, secretary-general of Caritas Macau, said: “Our thanks go to Sands China for organising this programme for the third consecutive year. The food kits they donated have helped fulfil the basic needs of underprivileged groups and alleviate their financial difficulties. Additionally, we appreciate Sands China for inviting senior volunteers from Caritas Macau to join this event, where they could further their contribution to society. We were pleased with how they engaged in volunteer service, spreading warmth and kindness together with the volunteers from Sands China.”

Addressing food security issues and supporting disadvantaged people are two primary focus areas of the global Sands Cares community engagement programme. In line with these priorities, Sands China has partnered with Caritas Macau since 2022 to address hunger among at-risk communities, along with supporting other efforts of the NGO.

Sands China kicked off this year’s Sands Cares Global Food Kit Build with an opening ceremony at The Venetian Macao’s Cotai Expo on the same day, officiated by Tang Yuk Wa, deputy director of the Social Welfare Bureau of the MSAR government; Pun; and Sands China executives.

In addition to working with Caritas Macau, Sands China has donated more than 1,700kg of surplus bread items to local green enterprise Macau ECOnscious in support of its Macau Community Fridge initiative.

The Sands Cares Global Food Kit Build is one of three signature Sands Cares initiatives held in Las Vegas Sands’ regions around the world, including the Sands Cares Global Hygiene Kit Build with Clean the World and the Sands Cares Accelerator, a program that helps advance non-profit organisations to achieve greater community impact. Together, these programs unify Sands properties in common goals to address global priorities including hardship relief, disaster response and preparedness, education, cultural and natural heritage, and local business and non-profit partner development to meet the needs of Sands’ communities.

The food pack assembly event is part of this year’s celebration of the 15th anniversary of the Sands Cares Ambassador program. In August 2009, Sands China became the first integrated resort enterprise in Macau to put together a volunteer team, which has grown to include over 3,300 employees from various Sands China properties. Community projects like the Sands Cares Global Food Kit Build are part of parent company Las Vegas Sands’ Sands Cares global corporate citizenship program.

Sands China said it spares no effort in promoting and fulfilling corporate social responsibility, actively participating in the Sands Cares corporate citizenship program to give back to the Macau community. The Sands Cares program leads the group in philanthropic work worldwide, including financial giving, community problem solving and collaboration, in-kind donations, and team member volunteerism. Key areas of Sands Cares in Macau include the Sands Cares Ambassador programme for volunteering in the local community, charitable contributions to NGOs and community organisations, and sponsorship of community events.
